Valentine’s Day - Have we lost sight of the meaning?

Store fronts were filled with cuddly stuffed animals, heart-shaped chocolate boxes and candy hearts with little sayings on them long before the Christmas decorations came off the shelves.

Some believe that February 14th is the most romantic day of the year, while others are ready to boycott the money making holiday. Forgive me if I decline to enthusiastically join this commercialized holiday ritual.

Valentines Day at one time was a symbol of youthful love. Though the origin of the day is somewhat hazy, the importance of the day has been stripped by the commercialism that now puts a huge guilt trip on us to “show our love” by purchasing our significant other a gift they don’t really need or want.

Valentine’s Day ranks second to Christmas in terms of the number of greeting cards that are sent. How pathetic is that.

If my husband does choose to give in to the commercialism of this holiday, I hope he does it days after. I’d much rather has a discount box of chocolates. I know that I’ve been guilty of contributing to the pockets of the retailer. Go ahead, call me a hypocrite. I have celebrated the day with balloon bouquets, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and pink and red candy hearts.

But this year the image of cupid makes me sick. Just kidding, but seriously here men, we women don’t need the $100.00 bouquets of roses, the over priced Hallmark card or dinner at a fancy restaurant. All we need is for you to put down the toilet seat, do the laundry, take out the garbage, and take the kids out of our hair for an hour so that we can enjoy a luxurious bubble bath.

By now you are thinking that this woman is unromantic, a clone of Ebenezer Scrooge. Bah Humbug!

Well, you’re wrong. I am a sucker for love, a huge romantic, but to me an over priced bouquet of red roses doesn’t say love. To me romance is when my husband comes home from the grocery store and surprises me with a bouquet of fresh carnations because he wanted to brighten my day or when I wake up in the morning and his arms are around me or when he runs me a bubble bath after a stressful long day. It is those little things that show me that he loves me and appreciates me.

It is more important to give spontaneously. Don’t wait for a specific day to show your wife or girlfriend that you love her.

This year I’ve chosen to support the boycott of valentine consumerism. Instead I’m going to give my husband the gift that keeps on giving all year through- the gift of my love.

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away. Show your significant other that you care by giving them your time. It is important to appreciate them everyday. This Valentine’s Day let your gift come from your heart and not the store shelf.

Goodbye Cupid, I’m not stupid. Boycott Valentine’s Day for commercialism is out of control.

What Women Really Don’t Want - A Valentine’s Day Guide for What Not to Give

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Valentine’s Day outcomes generally fall into three basic categories: success, failure, or simply unremarkable. A successful Valentine’s Day is by far the preferred choice for most men and women, but also the most difficult to achieve. The reasons for this may vary, but my thoughts are that men just don’t really understand what women want. After having written an article entitled “What Women Really Want - A Guide for Valentine’s Day Gift Giving”, I’ve decided to tackle the polar opposite by sharing my thoughts and perceptions on what not to give to your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day.

The very first notion that overwhelmed my heart is most offensive gift of nothing. I’ve seen this all too often with married couples that don’t have a lot of money to spend on each other. But honestly, how much does it really cost to make a card, make a special dinner, or even draw the bath for your loved one. In my romantic mind, there is absolutely no excuse for the gift of nothing.

With that out of the way, I will continue on with the next worst gift of Valentine’s Day: a dieting book. You may be tempted because she’s been talking about how she wants to get into shape and she really wants to try this latest fad diet, but don’t do it. Because even if she really wanted it and acts like she’s happy you got it for her, deep down she’s thinking that you really feel she needs to lose a few pounds. I know it sounds totally silly, but face it, women are totally silly. Don’t buy her a fad diet book. Don’t even buy her a low-fat cook book. Which leads me to gift number three.

Don’t buy her a cookbook. She really probably doesn’t need another cookbook. And again, deep down she’s going to think that you perceive her as a bad cook that needs a little help in the kitchen. Women give off mixed signals at times, but don’t fall for it. It’s very similar to when she asks if an outfit makes her look fat. She says she wants the truth, but really she wants to hear that she looks great. If she asks for a cookbook, ask her why she needs a cookbook when she cooks so great without one.

Another suggestion, don’t fall prey to buying her a new vacuum. Even if she really needs one, get it another time. Don’t give it to her for Valentine’s Day, even if it’s wrapped with a pretty red bow. What woman wants to clean the house on Valentine’s Day? And giving her a vacuum is a hint that the job’s not getting done. In fact, steer clear of buying her anything cleaning-related. She doesn’t need to be reminded of her housekeeping duties on what is supposed to be the most romantic day of the year.

Furthermore, a thought that just occurred to me: don’t buy her something that is really for you. Like a flat screen TV or a Play Station 2. If she doesn’t really watch TV and doesn’t play video games, don’t act dumb and buy her something that she knows is something you really wanted.

An finally, although this is my personal opinion, avoid buying a ton of chocolates and candies. Most women don’t really want to eat all that junk anyway. I know, it sounds contradicting to worst gift numbers two and three. But in all honesty, we really don’t need all that sweet stuff. It’s really bad for our teeth.

In conclusion, I wish you the best in your endeavors and I hope you found this article of some assistance in your quest for the perfect gift. If you still need some support, please read my article about What Women Really Want. Trust me…I am a woman. And I will be leaving a copy of both articles in my husbands’ truck tomorrow.

Yes, You Can Have a Romantic Valentine’s Day, On A Budget

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

While we would all like to whisk our partner away to celebrate St Valentine’s Day at an exotic five star resort, I know I can’t afford it, just yet!

Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day luxuries on a budget that will amaze your partner. And if you do it just right, with a little creativity, you can have the ultra-romantic day that will convince your loved one of how much you love him or her. Again.

Getting out into the open air, just the two of you, is a great way to spend Valentines. Head for the hills or the state park. There are walks to suit all - whether its an easy walk or a more demanding hike. Remember, it’s February, so its likely that the place will be deserted and you will have all that natural beauty to yourself. And outdoor privacy is so romantic!

Take along a special picnic when you go out. In a small picnic basket collect a tablecloth, a vase with a realistic rose in it, 2 taper candles with holders (don’t forget a lighter) and a lovely meal for two. When you reach the picnic area you can surprise your partner by setting the table for a romantic meal. Sit down and enjoy!

You could take the picnic with you on a romantic drive, or for a day out kite flying or bicycling. Remember that it’s being together that is important.

The outdoors idea even works for couples that have children. There’s always plenty for the kids to do if there is a safe and empty playground close by. What better way to celebrate your love than by keeping one eye on the children and reminding yourself why you love them, and their other parent, so much.

Don’t fancy the great, romantic, outdoors? Cooking your romantic Valentine’s meal together is a great way to share the day. Male sure that your dinner choice is something you will both enjoy, even better if its a special treat you don’t often have. Go over the top in decorating the dining room and go to town on the place settings. Make sure you both dress up in your best clothes, as if it was your first date, with your best jewelry and scent.

The main thing to remember is that if you are together you will have as romantic a time as you would have at a posh resort or an exclusive restaurant. It’s the thought that counts, not how much money you spend.

10 Valentine Gifts Women Love

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Finding the perfect Valentine gift for the woman in your life can be a daunting task. To help you out, we’ve searched the internet to find our top 10 picks for Valentine’s Day. From flowers to jewelry to a romantic weekend at a bed & breakfast, you can simply surf the internet to buy or find all the information you need to make this a perfect Valentine’s Day for the woman you love.

1) Fresh flowers - flowers are still the most popular gift at Valentine’s Day. Of course, it is also the most expensive time of the year to buy flowers, particularly roses. Still, flowers remain a classic option and one that is always well received. Try a local florist for guaranteed delivery, or one of the many online retailers if you will be apart this Valentine’s Day.

2) chocolate - chocolate is a close second to flowers, and for good reason. Many women crave chocolate, and Godiva is the ultimate indulgence. When in doubt, buy a variety chocolate gift pack that will allow her to sample a different treat each time. She’ll enjoy the mystery of what’s inside each tasty treat, and be dreaming about the next one.

3) Perfume - Think of perfume as “flowers in a bottle.” A pleasing smell is a powerful aphrodisiac, and a carefully selected scent will make her feel special. Perfume is also nice because the gift lives on for several months, and she’ll think of you each time she sprays on your wonderful gift. Ask your female friends what scents are popular this year, or sneak a peek in her magazines to see what perfumes are being advertised.

4) Spa/Massage Gift Certificate - For a truly memorable experience, give her a trip to the spa. Woman love to feel pampered and a massage or spa treatment is a Valentine gift that will relax and elevate her mood.

5) Romantic Dinner At Home - If your wife or girlfriend normally does all the cooking, surprise her with a home-cooked meal. If you’re new to the kitchen, don’t try anything too ambitious. Pick some of her favorite foods and find some easy recipes to make. Don’t worry if your meal isn’t perfect, because for this gift the old adage, “it’s the thought that counts,” is definitely true.

6) Jewelry - Women love jewelry, especially when it’s received as a gift on a special occasion. Price is always a factor, but also consider getting something personal (e.g., a dolphin pendant for the ocean lover) or personalized (with your names and date) to make sure this Valentine gift is unforgettable.

7) Teddy Bear - Nothing says cute and cuddly like a teddy bear. The teddy bear has changed a lot since you had one as a kid. Now, there are many different styles, varieties, and colors. Find one just right and she’ll thank you for your thoughtfulness.
8) Bouquet Of Heart Shaped Cookies - Cookies are always a “sweet” gift, and heart-shaped gourmet cookies make a great Valentine gift. Personalize the cookies with your own special message to let her know how you feel.

9) chocolate Covered Strawberries - Strawberries are the perfect Valentine’s Day fruit - red, heart-shaped and sweet. We already know how women feel about chocolate, so combine the two and you’ve got an unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift. chocolate covered strawberries are normally shipped via overnight air for maximum freshness, so these delectable treats also make a great gift for the procrastinator.

10) Romantic Weekend Get-Away - Nothing rekindles romance like a little time away from it all with your Valentine. For a truly romantic weekend, try a bed-and-breakfast someplace special. Many bed and breakfasts offer Valentine’s Day or romance packages, so it’s best to reserve this date far in advance. If you can’t get away during Valentine’s Day, you can always make the reservation by February 14 and give her a special card telling her about your future romantic escape.

Valentine’s Day gifts can be difficult, but with a little planning and insight in your wife or girlfriend’s preferences, you can find her a memorable gift this year. You could even chose a different Valentine gift from this list and be covered for the next 10 years!
