Omega Seamaster Watch: Watch Review
Friday, April 24th, 2009When the James Bond movie franchise dumped the Rolex Watch in favor of the Omega Seamaster, the whole world took notice. Sales on both the Authentic and Omega Replica Watches shot up. And although the Seamaster can’t actually cut through rope, (like in the movie) its sturdy internal and external construction and an understated appearance make it obvious as to why this reasonably priced (in both Authentic and Replica Watches versions) Swiss classic is a serious competitor to the Rolex.
The Seamaster has an “old school” hand winder which powers durable, shock- proof internals that embody the Swiss standard for unbeatably consistent functionality. Subtle wave markings in the dial face make the watch appear and disappear depending on your viewing angle. Omega uses a proprietary coating called Super Luminova on its watch arms for excellent glow in the dark visibility.
The glass on the Seamaster is made of a synthetic material called “sapphire crystal”. It’s one of the hardest synthetic materials this side of a diamond, and extremely difficult to scratch or damage.
The bezel dial of the watch is made of smooth anodized aluminum that’s mated to the body so well there’s no danger of catching on fabric or scratching an arm.
The Omega Seamaster also addresses a rarely mentioned watch gripe. The sculpted wave pattern on the bottom of the watch prevents it from sliding on the wrist. Another great detail: the skeleton arms (as opposed to solid arms) open up the watch surface giving it a streamlined, breezy appearance.
The Seamaster also features a solid metal bracelet with burnished, interlocking links that fits on the wrist easily with complete flexibility and – take note – no hair pulling. The metal skeleton clasp has a foldover design that many watch aficionados feel is the best in the industry.
The Seamaster also gets an “A” for aesthetic with its deep, ocean-blue face color. At the risk of digressing, this humble reviewer lives in the desert and misses the ocean desperately. The Seamaster has that ineffable “nautical watch” feel to it that makes me sense that the ocean isn’t so far away after all.
While the price of the Seamaster – often over $2000 – can jolt a prospective customer, the realization that you are buying a watch in the Rolex class at half the price, makes the Omega Seamaster suddenly a become a good deal. And if you simply cannot afford that price tag, the Replica Watches version is readily available throughout the market. Making this watch go from being a good buy to a bargain buy.
